An "Akira" adaptation has been in the works for while now but with no confirmation. It was exciting news as Akira is one of the most thought provoking sci fi movies ever, made more appealing by the fact that is animated film based on a Japanese comic. However, we were soon dismayed by the rumours that the characters will be "white washed" for no reason other than the view that caucasian actors a considered more "bankable". A cosmoplitan cast would be more appropriate for the dayglo setting, while providing some respect for the source material.

But these were all rumours as the movie hadn't been greenlight....

What's that? A segue way? That's right, you guessed it, the movie has been green lit. This means that Warner Bros and the director, Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, Unknown), can finally close in on the cast, with the role of Kaneda and Tetsuo taking point....and according to Variety’s sources, "Tron Legacy" actor Garrett Hedlund is already speeding swiftly towards one of those lead roles.

Hedlund was among a list of [white] actors reportedly being considered for the role of Kaneda as early as July. Also on that list were older A-list stars Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix, whose only real involvement with the project, it turns out, may have been to earn some press for the conflicted adaptation (Surprise!).

Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron were among names thrown around for Tetsuo. Again, we are slighlty dissappointed that so far there are no Asian actors, but bottom line is to have the most approparaite actor for the role. I have to say, I like Garrett Hedlund as Kaneda. He fits the role quite nicely. Tetsuo is a little more tricky, and fans of Akira will appreciate that whoever is chosen must be extremley likeable and one that many can emotionally connect with. Having said that Robert Pattinson may be an interesting choice (not because we like him or emotionally connect with him cough) but because he is considered a heart throb (I'm disgusted at myself for even acknowledging this). Again, fans of Akira may appreciate the novelty in this.

Our choice would be Andrew Garfield or Chris Pine.
