Nobel Prize-winning economist and NY Times columnist Paul Krugman recently appeared on CNN where he spoke about ways to get the US out of its economic troubles.

He said:

If we discovered that space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive build-up to counter the space alien threat, and inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, 'whoops, we made a mistake,' we'd [still] be better. There was a 'Twilight Zone' episode like this, in which scientists fake an alien threat in order to achieve world peace. Well, this time we need it to get some fiscal stimulus.

In other words, we need an external catastrophe to help us (Republicans/ Tea Party/ Idiots) realise that we need a fiscal stimulus to get the economy going rather than fighting amongst ourselves over politically ideology.

Krugman is likely referring to "The Outer Limits" episode, "The Architects of Fear" (watch episode here), about a secret group of scientists who convince the world that an alien invasion is coming in order to force countries to make peace with each other.

This concept is also similar to the plot of "Watchmen," in which Ozymandias fakes an attack by Dr. Manhattan to prevent a nuclear war betwen the US and Russia.
